Arabic illustration, Devils

Hexagram with a human figure and devils appears on an illustration from the 14th century C.E. Image was copied from Wikimedia Commons, entry: Category: Kitab al-Bulhan (Book of Wonders, MS. Bodl. Or. 133 manuscript, uploaded by: “Peacay”.

This illustration is included in a collection of Arabic illustration dealing with astrology, astronomy and geomancy. The book was compiled by Abd al-Hasan Al-Isfahani. I reckon, based on the context, that this Hexagram represents a star or a planet.

65th anniversary of the Jewish Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

In 2008 the Bank of Poland issued this coin to commemorate 65th anniversary of the Jewish Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On the coin we see a Magen David (Yellow Badge) in the shape of barbed wire (which is a well known motif in commemorating the Holocaust) and a girl wearing a beret.

Another coin in this series shows another Magen  David (Yellow Badge) against a brick wall. Courtesy of Gideon from “collect”, the Israeli collectors’ forum.

Big Smoke

Artist Sabina Saad spent many years in Italy before she came to Israel.  In Italian the comics “balloons” are called FUMETTO, which means small smoke, but Jews in the holocaust went to Heaven in a Big Smoke. There are no words in these “balloons” since Jewish victims’ voices were not heard at that time, and since many Jewish survivors stopped believing in God.

Moroccan local stamp from 1895

Philatelist Dr Claude Wainstain from France sent me this 1895 Magen David on a postal stamp (and other stamps from the same period) and wrote the following:

The Moroccan local stamp that is shown o your blog (April 6 2008, "rare stamp from Tetouan') was on use by one of the 20 local postage services, of which 19 where created by Jews. This one was created in March 1896 by Josue Benchimol, from Tetuan to

Chaouen (70 km). There are two major symbols on this stamp, the six-points star and the moon crescent with a star, and it's difficult not to imagine that they symbolize both religions.

Another local post was created in 1895 by Aaron Cohen from Tanger to

Arcila (50 km), with a Magen David.
