Instant Identifier

Yellow Badge is used here as an instant identifier of Holocaust survivors israeli art

Yair Vardi drew this blunt caricature, that accuses the Israeli society and government of neglecting helpless Holocaust survivors.

Translation from Hebrew caption: In Israel there are about 260000 Holocaust survivors, third of them live in poverty.

The Yellow Badge is used here as an instant identifier of Holocaust survivors, and that’s why I publish it here.

Nechama Golan, The Tears of the Homeland

Star of David angles israeli art Photo is courtesy of Bnei Brak artist, Nechama Golan. It took part in an art exhibition titled: Layers of Memory that was held in Zaritzky Artists House in Tel Aviv in 2007.
We see a Jewish angle and a Moslem angle watching the tears of the Israeli-Palestinian homeland, which is divided between two entities that produce only suffering (tears). The Star of David is used here as an identifier of angles- a totally original concept- how didn’t we think about it ourselves?

Nechama Golan, Comparisons

Star of David was a symbol of weakness israeli art

Photo is courtesy of the artist, Nechama Golan, who took a photograph of her own hand, and processed it in a computer in 2007. The work took part in an exhibition titled: Layers of Memory. When I look at it, I reflect about the Nazi salute, but during the Holocaust the Star of David was a symbol of weakness, and look how proud it is now, towards our 60th Independence Day. The two versions of the same image lead the interested spectator to make comparisons…

Weakness

Interestingly, one may see similar blue Stars of David on the walls all around the Palestinian Authority areas; those were made by proud settlers, expressing their conviction that Israel is strong. Here, in Jaffa, the same emblem suggests Weakness…

2. Sehnsucht Heimat - Souvenir from Tirol

3. European Eyes on Japan - Souvenir from Tokyo

5. MZG - Souvenir from the GDR

These Souvenirs, according to the artist:

… are mini-copies, memories of a trip, a stay somewhere, a moment. They come from a home, which they want to mirror, into a strange land: fragments of memory, chunks of yearning, signs of history, evidence of existence, knick-knacks.
