Prof. Anita W.Novinsky from Sao Paulo University is an expert on the subject of the Anusim (Crypto Jews, Coversos) in Brazil. I saw a long interview with her on the Documentary: A Estrela Oculta do Sertão, dealing with the subject of the estimated 120 million Anusim in Brazil. I asked her if she stumbled upon Stars of David in Brazil.

She wrote to me that the star of David is very common in the north east of brazil, by the people in general. (according to the above mentioned documentary most of the anusim are concentrated in this area).

The star of David is used by fishermen, who leave to the sea in a boat, and in the bottom of the boat they print the star of David, to give them luck.

There are anusim who use the star in their chain, and in their homes it appears frequently.

Prof. Anita W.Novinsky referred me for detailled informations in the books of the famous folklorist Luiz Camara Cascudo.

At the Bar Mitzvah Party of the class we were asked to make a personal piece on one of the most important figures in the history of Israel, which has an impact on our lives today.
In my head I saw all kinds of people, but suddenly I remembered the military parade in Jerusalem with the Magen David planes made in heaven.
At first the teacher said, No way, we introduce characters, not shapes or symbols. I said my character is the star of David, and after he saw that I insisted, he agreed.
My grandfather made me a wooden star in his carpentry, and tied it to my body in such a way that I could also walk. We painted it together in blue and white. I put on blue pants and white shirt, and a hat covered with small Stars of David which Yaeli helped me paste.
When they wanted to put make up on my face before the party I said Magen David does not wear makeup.
A lot of adults came and asked me what is my character, as if they did not see it, and then said "How wonderful, what an original idea." At first I answered everybody, but at the end I lost my patience, so I said "David," they said, "How wonderful, what an original idea."
Then we introduced the characters on stage and everyone had to say something about his character. Before me there were several children who spoke about the character they chose, but I could not listen because I was so excited.
Then came my turn.
Edna, the movement teacher, prepared the dance with me. We marked in advance the six points with stickers. People were waiting for another child that would talk, but I just moved silently, not slow nor fast, and Edna beat on a rhythmic tambourine. I drew with my movements a Star of David, every time from another point, so that eventually I drew out the six Stars of David that hide in each six pointed star.
At the end I stood quietly and said "I'm a Star of David". I went down off the stage, because what else can the Star of David say, and everyone laughed, and clapped their hands, even though I said it seriously.
All at once all the tension left my body, and the Star of David whispered to me it’s the first time he comes out to make people laugh, and I was glad, because I was just a simple star of David, without makeup and without words.

Ingrid Hehmeyer wrote in her research titled “Water and Sign Magic in al-Jabin, Yemen” that analysys of manuscripts proves that the pentagram replaced the circle (“seal”) in a thirteenth century and very soon after that it was replaced or used side by side with the hexagram.

“The six-pointed star is shown in a thirteenth century and a fifteenth-century manuscript of [Ali d. 1225] al-Buni’s work [Kitab Shams al-Ma`arif wa-Lata’if al-`Awarif]… Other authors present the seal in its five- and six-pointed shape within the same manuscript”.

Ingrid Hehmeyer adds that aside from their protective role “In the ancient and in the Islamic worlds, five- and/or six pointed stars are found on weights, stamps, coins, and seals, where they attest to the item’s validity and legitimacy”... "In Islamic Yemen, five- and six-pointed stars as geometric shapes are widespread in domestic architecture, on house facades, interior walls, doors, and windows; as part of inscriptions having a religious nature and on such religious architectural works as mosques and minarets, tombs and cenotaphs; as designs on amuletic jewellery; as graffiti on walls and rocks...and on so-called magic-medicinal bowls."

Perhaps in 1405, HENRY IV added the France Modern to his shield.

The position of the three fleurs de lys was more than once changed in the Royal Shield of England, and they were finally removed in 1801 because after the French Revolution, the Kingdom of France had ceased to exist.

One of the most conspicuous characteristics of the created world is its multiple polarities. Following the original polarity of Creator-Creation, there are polarities in every dimension of Creation, such as spirit and matter, North and South pole, male and female, positive and negative in electricity, and so forth. The Chinese principle of yin-yang also expresses aspects of polarity.
A striking example of two opposing forces forming in their balance a very beneficial energy field are the centrifugal energies of the planets held in their positions by the gravitational pull exerted by the sun. Without the latter, the planets including our earth would spin somewhere in the void of the space; and without the former, they would plunge into the sun and melt in its atomic furnace.
When looking closely at any of these examples, we notice that some of them consist of two related power fields, such as male-female, while others are two sides of the same force, as in the case of electricity. Without flow, the latter would exist only as potential. In fact, physics gives each case its specific properties, but for our purposes, we shall group all of them as polarities, and concentrate on the relating force between their respective "poles".
No pole could exist without its counterpart, nor could there be poles without this relating force. For instance, an atom would not be an atom without the force between its positive and negative particles, nor could the species continue to exist without the force between its male and female partners.
On the other hand, we will not find any polarizing force between statues of a male and female, or between a male fish and a female bird. Properly understood, all polarities, including that of spirit and matter, are categories of relationships, and not contrasts. Thus, poles are not antagonistic sites; they are opposite yet related points in a field of energy. The bar magnet with its field of force made visible by iron filings demonstrates this clearly.
Interestingly enough, the very first statement in Holy Scripture indicates polarity: "In the beginning God created Heavens and Earth." Here, the word heavens (שמים , shamayim) denotes both the sky (רקיע , raqi'a) which at a later stage is also called heavens, שמים (vs.8); and a spiritual entity, often referred to as "The Kingdom of Heavens." This Kingdom of Heavens exists on Earth - its material pole. Obviously, all of us are exposed to, and permeated by, this polarity, whether we recognize it or not.
An interesting question was raised already in ancient times: "Where do the heavens begin? Beyond the clouds? Beyond the atmosphere? Beyond the moon?" The answer was: "Approximately a yard above the ground" - that means to say in the area of the diaphragm of an adult, whether he lives high up in the Himalayas, or whether he works as a miner hundreds of feet below the surface of the earth. All the organs below the diaphragm are carnal while those above it can, and should, express also spiritual or Divine qualities (as e.g. voice; intellect; self reflection; mercy; forgiveness). The "lower" are to be guided and treated by the "upper" organs and the qualities they carry. The heart with its double nature , symbolically located just above the diaphragm, plays the role of the connecting "chakra", as mentioned in Chapter 2 - THE SIX-POINTED STAR IN OTHER CULTURES and in Chapter 7 - THE KABBALISTIC TREE OF LIFE.

Dr. Asher Eder's notes to this chapter:

1) In the state before Creation - ein soph - no polarity exists.

2) Cf. Rashi Gen.2:7. Heavens, as distinct from firmament (רקיע , raqia), and sky (,שחקים

shehaqim). However, from Gen.1:8 on, the firmament is also called heavens.

3) The word שמים , shamayim, can be derived from the word שם , shem, name, referring to the Name of the Lord. The dual form שמים, would then refer to both the Lord's Name and to the priestly tribe of Shem, which bears the Divine Name on Earth (Hirsch, Genesis; also Num.6:22-27, note 15 of chapter 8, note 3 of chapter 12). However, שמים can also be derived from the word מים, mayim, water, and would then mean "that which is water". Allegorically, water can stand for truth (cf. Baba Kama, 17, p.I), and for nations (cf. Ps. 124:2-4; Is.17:12). Even in this case, the waters below the firmament would, naturally, "be gathered together into one place", but might finally rejoin the "upper waters" in the Name of Names, i.e. in the "Kingdom of Heavens". - In Kabbalistic thought, the word שמיםis a combination of the signs, standing for ,אש esh, fire; and מ, mem, water.

Some scholars see the word שמים as deriving from שם, sham, there (i.e. that which is beyond or far from the earth), but this would not explain the dual form of שמים , shamayim. It would also contradict the prophetic teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven, which is to be established on the Earth, and not somewhere outside. However, see also note 13 of chapter 20.

4) The Hebrew language knows two words for heart: לב, lev; and לבב, levav. In the latter, the doubling of ב may indicate this double nature. We should love the Lord our God with all our (double natured) heart (לבב - Deuter. 6:5; 1.Kings 8:61) so that we will serve him willingly “with a perfect heart” (לב , 1.Chron. 29:9)

It appears under the opening text which is always from Psalm 20."The oldest known amulet was made as a single-leaf print in Prague in the 17th century. Patrizia Di Monte from Italy searches information about an old token with a six pointed star.

The face reports "JMPRESA VIVERI" surrounding the star of David, with a 5 pointed star on 6 o' clock, and on the other side a number "20".

This may be a token for food distribution from/to Hebrew community during second world war, in concentration camps. The strange thing is that in italian "IMPRESA VIVERI" is for "food business" but they use the "I" and not the "J" as first letter. There are some other token with "J" in place of "I" as the first capital letter, and they are mint in Germany.

Star of David appears on at least four reliefs in the wall of Jerusalem's Old City. Actually it is a six-pointed star which is called by Muslims Solomon's Seal. the wall was built from 1535 to 1538 by Turkish Sultan Suleiman I (the Magnificent), whose name is an Arabic translation of the Hebrew Biblical name Solomon. These reliefs are not the only reliefs which decorate the old city walls - there are more than one hundred designs, some of them showing other symbols such as the Octagram, the star with eight points.

In her book, Mandalas and Yantras in the Hindu traditions (2003) there’s a chapter about the hexagram, where I found some info that was new to me (but I didn’t find an answer to the question about the origin of the Indian hexagram).

In Budhist Tantrism the word "evam" is thought to be represented by two intertwined triangles...Kolver discusses the shapes of the letter e and the va which were remeniscent of downward pointing and upward pointing triangles around the sixth century C.E. and were visualized as hexagram... when Vagra-yogini is described as situated “in evam” this means that she is visualized inside a hexagram.

In descriptions of the symbolic shapes (mandala) of the elements the hexagram represents the element wind.

In the hexagram the deities are often worshipped at the points of intersection of the two triangles…

In Budhist traditions hexagrams appear especially in mandalas of Vajra-Varahi / Vajra-Yogini.

According to Nath 1975-1976:78 the hexagram is also found in Indian temples, especially in Rajastahn were it is believed to have been associated with the worship of Siva and Sakti.

The hexagram appears in Islamic monuments of North India. Its center features a point (bindu) a lotus or a dancing peacock. (Nath 1975-1976:74-75).

Perhaps the first appearance of two interlaced triangles (the exact image of what we recognize as the Star of David) is in several stone seals found in Festos palace in Crete by an Italian archaeologist of Jewish origin, Doro Levy. At the latest, they are from 1700 B.C.E, the date at which the palace was destroyed and a full seven hundred years before King David was even born. These seals are now exhibited in the Herakelion Museum in Crete.

In 1902 Arthur Evans discovered two stars of david’ on a mural plaster at the Court of Distaffs in a palace in Knossos. Now they are exhibited in the fresco storeroom of the Herakleion Museum.

I purchased the rug in the photo below (in Baku, Azerbaijan) and am very curious about the symbolism. At first I thought it might be from a Jewish home, but then thought it might be some sort of neo-facist iconography.

I had an appraiser take a look at it, and she is rather intrigued as well - her speciality is carpets.

we have approached museums and they never respond! I am simply interested in its origins etc. - I find it intriguing and also a lovely piece (the workmanship is beautiful).
The other things are flags we think - I originally thought they were the wings of the birds, but the appraiser pointed out they were flags - the rug is in storage, but I believe the stripes are green, yellow and red. Colors of Lithuania?

German Colony neighborhood was founded (1873) by the German Protestant community of the Temple (Tempelgesellschaft), which have no connection with the order of the Knights Templar. Their Cemetery started in 1878. The members of this group were expelled by the British authorities in 1948 because some of them were members of the German Nazi Movement.

So this Hexagram seems to belong to an Israeli Christian citizen, which had no connection to either of the above mentioned communities.
